If you’re looking to buy gravel or cyclocross bikes that suit your build, you’ve come to the right place. Zinn Cycles has been serving the cycling community for 40+ years and specializes in designing, fitting, and building quality bicycles. While best known for specializing in bikes (and cranks) for big and tall people, we build dream bikes for every size person.

Gravel Bikes vs. Cyclocross Bikes

While cyclocross has been around for decades, gravel biking is a relatively new category in the cycling community. Both bike styles are popular because they offer you more freedom and versatility on different types of terrain, allowing you to explore routes off the beaten path. While there are differences between the two styles, they have a lot in common and are often grouped together and termed “gravel” bikes.

Gravel bikes are typically designed to be more comfortable and stable for exploring challenging terrain at your own pace, while cyclocross bikes are designed to be high-performance machines that are typically used for competitions.

Due to their wider tires (typically up to 50mm) and endurance geometry, gravel bikes allow for all-day comfort, even on jagged and rugged landscapes. In contrast, cyclocross bikes typically have tires up to 33mm and are designed with race position geometry and a horizontal top tube that helps a cyclist carry the bike over obstacles. Both styles can transition seamlessly from smooth pavement to rugged terrain.

Our semi-custom Clydesdale brand has an extremely versatile bike that may be fit for road, gravel, or cyclocross riding with a selection of specific components. We work with you to target the right level of comfort, whether for many miles of scenic cross-country road and gravel or more aggressive riding.

FAQ

I already have a road bike. Is a gravel bike worth it?

Gravel bikes are very similar to road bikes but with more tire clearance and disc brakes. Gravel bikes also tend to have a modified geometry that creates a less aggressive, more comfortable riding position. A gravel bike provides a lot of versatility because, with a 2nd set of wheels with road tires, it can be easily swapped between a gravel bike and a road bike. With bikes custom-built for gravel roads, you get a ride that’s light and efficient on compact surfaces and still provides stability for moderate off-road terrain. Many road riders who buy gravel bikes love the versatility they provide for road and off-road riding.

Can I get a used gravel bike?

We sometimes have used gravel bikes. If you’re putting additional money and energy into maintaining a bike with no guarantees from the seller, you should weigh the costs against a brand-new gravel bike from our collection – which does come with a satisfaction guarantee – before purchasing a used bike.

What are my financing options if I buy from Zinn Cycles?

We offer a number of financing options for your convenience, including customization for the amount you want to finance, as well as up to 60 months to pay back the total amount. If you’re looking to buy a custom Zinn or semi-custom Clydesdale bike on a payment plan, explore all of our financing solutions.

What kind of maintenance costs can I expect over time?

Our gravel bikes are like any bike when it comes to maintenance. They require regular inspections, replacements, and repairs for many components. Most people find that they spend about $300 per year on regular maintenance. If you shop for robust, durable replacement components, you’ll be able to save money in the long run, as they won’t wear out as easily as their cheaper counterparts. It’s also important to remember that heavier riders who buy gravel bikes will need to perform more regular maintenance, such as wheel truing, chain replacement, and tire replacement. We have a recommended maintenance schedule and regular checks for your convenience.
